Interview with Wet For Her

We are thrilled that we got to interview the Wet For Her Founder and CEO, Alice Derock. We’ve known and loved the company for a few years now, as they are a pioneer in developing sex toys for lesbian couples and queer women. They are an innovative pleasure product designer and manufacturer that specializes in non-realistic sex toys for the lesbian and queer community. All toys are made of high quality body-safe materials. We are currently having fun testing some of their toys and we will be posting these reviews within the next few weeks. Stay tuned.

Squirty Birdies: What is your role in the company and how long have you been working at Wet For Her?

Wet For Her: My name is Alice Derock and I’m the Founder and CEO of Wet For Her. I started the company 12 years ago, when I noticed there were not many pleasure products aimed at same sex female couples. This inspired me to start designing and manufacturing sex toys, something I continue to do. I also realised there was no real retail space specifically for same sex female couples so I established an online store specifically catering to lesbian and queer couples. As time has gone on, we have expanded to become more inclusive and to create more products for our customers.

Squirty Birdies: What are the company’s purpose and vision?

Wet For Her: Our company’s purpose and mission is create a sex positive space for those who identify as  lesbian, bisexual, queer cis, trans, or nonbinary. We want to cater to the needs of a community we belong to, that we understand. Unlike other companies, our space and the products we design are specifically with this customer base in mind.

Squirty Birdies: Can you tell us a bit about the company’s journey, from how it all started to where you are today? Sub-question: what were the major obstacles and successes in your journey and how did you navigate between the two?

Wet For Her: The Wet For Her journey began in 2009. I was disappointed to discover that the sex toy industry was limited when it came to non-phallic sex toys for the lesbian and queer community. Although there were a variety of sex toys for women on the market and there is of course, some crossover but there didn’t seem to be many specific sex toys aimed at lesbians or queer women. It was this that inspired us to design and manufacture lesbian products such as our Finger Extender and our mini scissoring vibrator, the RockHer.  We are a lesbian company that knows about lesbian sex! Our journey continued with the launch of an online retail space. We wanted our customers, lesbians and queer women to be at the forefront of our business.

Like our industry peers, the obstacles we have experienced include being penalised by financial institutions like when it comes to getting a bank account. One of the biggest obstacles we have faced is the misunderstanding and the incorrect preconception people have when you say it’s a “lesbian business”. Many people assume we are running a porn company which we are not! It also doesn’t help that when you search for the term “lesbian” online, automatically porn pops up. There is more to our community and I think that people sometimes forget this.

One of my biggest personal successes is that I love that the products I have designed and created such as the Two Finger Extender, the Four Double Dildo, the Five, the Fusion, the Union and the RockHer, have all been so positively received by customers. It is what inspires me to continue to design! I am also so grateful to our wonderful customers worldwide that have continued to support us.

Squirty Birdies: You have some really innovative toys, like the RockHer scissoring toy. Can you tell a bit about the design process of that, e.g. how did you come up with that idea and did you have to conduct many iterations based on user feedback? What were the main obstacles in the development process, if any?

Wet For Her: Thank you! We lesbians (like everyone else) love to have sex in different positions. I know from experience that scissoring is one of the most popular sex positions amongst our community. So I wanted to think of how I could I elevate this, how can I make scissoring even better. I wanted to find a way to create a vibrational sensation to scissor sex. This inspired me to design a vibrator that can be placed between couples to stimulate the clitorises of each partner. It take a good few years to perfect the design, lots of drawings and tests. Once I was happy with the design, a prototype was made and from this the final product, which is what you see on the online shop

Squirty Birdies:  Many of your toys can be bought in three different sizes, S, M and L. Is there a size that is particularly popular?

Wet For Her: Wet For Her has a unique finger size guide. This helps our customers understand the sizing of our products. By offering a variation of sizes, we understand that its not one size fits all! We wanted to give our customers the choice of sizes so they can purchase what suits them best.

Squirty Birdies: What are the main changes in the sex toys market compared to when you started and now? Sub-question: how has the sex toys market targeting queer people evolved?

Wet For Her: The sex toy market has become more mainstream and it’s more acceptable to talk sex than ever before! It has always been an industry that is involving and adapting. The thing I love about the industry is that it has never been what your sexuality is, it’s always been about business.

In regards targeting queer people, the sex toy industry is adapting and we are slowly seeing more companies embracing the LGBTQ+ market.

We have always understood that is a market and we are proud to be at the forefront of this.

Squirty Birdies:  In the last few years, there has been an increase in the number of startups aiming to design a non-realistic toy for queer audiences. Do you have any tips for them?

Wet For Her: Don’t give up! The sex toy industry is tough and longevity is in creating products that people want. I would say do your research, get feedback and don’t be afraid to adapt the product if need be.

Squirty Birdies: Thank you so much for taking the time to answer these!
